Ode To A Dining Room Table

For Sale: Dining Room Table
This table was purchased by my parents somewhere near Canoga Park, CA just outside of LA in the late 60’s. Since then it has been packed up and carried up and down many flights of stairs by multiple people driving multiple vehicles in many different cities.

This table has traveled more than some people I know. Along the way it has hosted way too many family meals to count. Sometimes there was fancy china, sometimes noodles were eaten directly from its surface, and sometimes it was covered with a bounty of potluck food and refreshments; casseroles, meat of all kinds, fresh vegetables, (mushy vegetables that everyone made eyes about), pie's and cakes. Then there were the ceremonies and religious feasts. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and even a Seder or two. There were birthdays, birthdays and more birthdays (and many more!). And there continue to be many more.
This table is also where multiple generations of children, friends and relatives studied, prayed and talked to each other for hours. We talked about important political revolution stuff, we talked about stupid stuff, and sometimes we were just mad and we argued. Everyone felt regal when they sat at the head of the table too; Toddlers, teenagers, drunk girlfriends and grandparents. And laughter. Laughter over poker games, Monopoly, Yahtzee (with and without shots), Scrabble, and a bunch of games that were made up by children and made little sense to the grown ups in the room. 52 card pickup? .A few things happened at this table that I promised not to talk about and there are some things I just don't want to talk about, but there are other things that people haven't stopped  talking about.
There is something about a solid wood table like this that makes me feel like the wood somehow, has the ability to absorb and preserve the energy that has surrounded it. To the table it probably seems as though the world revolves around it. I hope this table goes on to be visited by an ever expanding variety of people in more and more homes over time. Or maybe it will just end up being burned as a prop for a really cool Hollywood movie. That would be fine too. Its just a table you know.
